Acropolis Cats, Chapter 4
In which the Dutchess of Milan introduces Don Stephano to their secret and troublesome guest.
Dutchess Costanza led the way through the lower tunnels of Sforza Castle. These had been the realm of cats since the Human Age, where the Old Dukes had ventured occasionally for clandestine meetings and secret escapes.
“The Duke has devised a plan,” she began, “by which our son Benvolio shall act as your apprentice until he is fully grown. You will educate him in the ways of diplomacy, and of the world.” She turned her head and looked him directly in the eye, “No harm shall come to him. When your tutelage is complete, he will be a man.”
This was most unwelcome news. Stephano had some small affection for young Benvolio, whom he had known since birth and who was destined to rule this city one day, but the prospect of conducting his particular sort of work with an excited kitten dangling from his back dimmed his mood considerably. Certain that his short pause had already said too much, he phrased his assent with extra panache.
“Your wish,” he told the Dutchess, “is my command.”
The elegant pair broke into a run and leapt as one, throwing their weight into all eight paws as they lit against a heavy door, then pouncing and twisting to the floor like acrobats.
